Why is this important?

  • With the establishment of the new Australia New Zealand Therapeutic Products Authority, it is important to preserve Australia’s current high standards in quality, safe and effective therapeutic products.
  • This funding will allow the Department of Health and Ageing to continue to provide advice to the Government on public health policy associated with therapeutic goods in Australia.

Who will benefit?

  • The public health and safety of Australians will be safeguarded through the preservation of current high standards in therapeutics regulation.

What funding is the Government committing to this initiative?

  • The Government will provide continued funding of $2.4 million over two years to continue the Department of Health and Ageing’s role advising Government on therapeutic products policy.

What have we done in the past?

  • Currently, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), part of the Department of Health and Ageing, provides both policy advice and regulates the standards of therapeutic products provided to the Australian market. The new trans-Tasman Therapeutic Products Authority will be solely a regulatory body.

When will the initiative conclude?

  • This measure will be reviewed in the 2008-09 Budget, after the new trans-Tasman Authority has been established.
