The Original Medicare Safety Net was introduced in 1984. The Original Medicare Safety Net (OMSN) increases the Medicare rebate from 85 per cent of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) fee to 100 per cent of the MBS fee for out-of-hospital services, once the annual threshold amount has been met.
- The amount that accrues to the threshold is the difference between the out-of-hospital (OOH) Medicare benefit and the MBS fee.
- In 2020 the threshold for the OMSN is $477.90.
The Department of Human Services (DHS) automatically calculates OMSN accumulation and benefits.
