Norfolk Island became an external territory of Australia from 1 July 2016, with legislation applying to support health and aged care programs.
The South East Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) within NSW Health has now assumed the management, delivery and regulation of state-type health services for Norfolk Island (due to the Sydney airport being in its catchment and the airport being used as the gateway to Norfolk Island). To support the implementation of primary health care programs on Norfolk Island and for consistency with the arrangements for delivering state-type health services, Central and Eastern Sydney Primary Health Network (CESPHN) agreed to include the island’s population within its catchment.
CESPHN was identified as the most appropriate PHN to support the Norfolk Island population as the region aligns with that of the SESLHD. The CESPHN region also includes Lord Howe Island which has similar remoteness and access issues.
