Bonded Medical Places (BMP) Scheme - Summary

The BMP Scheme is intended to provide more doctors for areas experiencing doctor shortages. Twenty five percent of all first year Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) in Australian medical schools are allocated to the Scheme. This is expected to increase to 28.5% by 2017.

Existing participants who accepted a place under the Scheme and commenced their medical degree in 2015 or earlier made a commitment to work in a District of Workforce Shortage (mostly outer metropolitan, rural or remote areas) for a period of time equal to the length of their medical degree. This period, known as the Return of Service Period (RoSP), can be shortened by undertaking pre-vocational or vocational training in eligible areas and by undertaking the RoSP in more remote areas. The RoSP must be commenced within a year of a participant obtaining fellowship - either a GP or specialist.

The Commonwealth Government announced, as part of the 2015 Budget, some changes to the BMP Scheme, which commenced from 2016.

Currently, around 7,000 individuals participate in the Scheme with up to 800 being added each year, as the 100 places which previously attached to the discontinued Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship Scheme (MRBS) transfer to the BMP Scheme.
