This is a publication of the National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council which is managed by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing and defines the requirements for the packaging and transport of specimens and associated materials.

The Requirements for the Packaging and Transport of Pathology Specimens and associated materials sets out the minimum standards to assist pathology laboratories with the preparation of policies and procedures for the correct packaging of pathology specimens and associated materials for transportation. Pathology specimens and associated materials must be transported and packaged in a suitable manner to:

    • Protect the safety of everyone required to handle the specimen and package; and
    • Ensure that the material is maintained under suitable conditions.
This document must be read in conjunction with the Tier 2 document - Requirements for Medical Pathology Services.

This document has a date of effect of 1 December 2013. Please note that this document has an amendment.
