Information Sessions on New Medicare Benefit Schedule Items for Midwives

As part of its commitment to improving maternity services in Australia, the Australian Government will introduce a number of new midwifery items under the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS). These items will allow eligible midwives access to Medicare rebateable services.

To be eligible, registered midwives must be registered as meeting eligibility requirements set out by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, have professional indemnity insurance and have collaborative arrangements in place with a medical practitioner. Eligible midwives will be able to refer women to specialists and consultant physicians, request certain pathology and diagnostic Medicare rebateable services and prescribe Pharmaceutical Benefits Schedule (PBS) subsidised medicines.

From 1 July 2010 midwives could register for a healthcare provider number from Medicare Australia, allowing them to claim directly for these MBS items from 1 November 2010.

Recognising that private health insurance is a major funder of maternity services, the Department will host information sessions in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne with private health insurers, peak bodies and other industry stakeholders to discuss these changes.

Private health insurers have been contacted regarding the dates and times for these information sessions. For more information, please contact Jane Richardson on 02 6289 9401 or jane.richardson@health.gov.au.

A proposed list of the MBS items for midwifery services is attached to this circular, noting that these items still need to go through parliamentary processes.
