Private Health Insurance (Benefit Requirements) Amendment Rules 2012 (No. 1) - Changes to Second Tier Eligible Hospitals

The Private Health Insurance (Benefit Requirements) Amendment Rules 2012 (No. 1) (the Rules) were registered with the Federal Register of Legislative Instruments (FRLI) and took effect on 20 March 2012 (FRLI No. F2012L00604).

Changes to the Rules relating to Schedule 5 – Second Tier Default Benefits (Second Tier) are outlined below.

Schedule 5 - Additions
The following private hospital facilities that have been added to Schedule 5 of the Rules will be eligible for Second Tier until 1 July 2013.

Next Second Tier Advisory Ccommittee Meeting

The next Second Tier Advisory Committee meeting will be held on Friday 25 May 2012, with a closing date for applications of Friday 4 May 2012.

Please note that applicants are required to submit nine copies of their applications to:

Applicants should also provide at least two copies of a covering letter which contains contact details of the person responsible for the application, including name, position title, phone number and postal address.

Second Tier Renewal Reminder

Please note that the Second Tier status of private hospital facilities listed in the attachment is due to expire on 30 June 2012.

Hospitals wishing to apply for continued eligibility need to submit an application to the Department in accordance with the process detailed above.

Accurate and up-to-date Declared Hospital Details

A hospital declaration is a legal instrument and it is important that information pertaining to declared hospitals is accurately reflected. In accordance with Private Health Insurance Circular PHI 76/11 of 17 October 2011, declared facilities need to notify the Department of Health and Ageing in the event of any of the following circumstances:
  • name/ownership changes
  • address changes
  • mergers
  • closures.
