Private Health Insurance (Benefit Requirements) Amendment Rules 2012 (No. 2) - Change to Second Tier Eligible Hospitals

The Private Health Insurance (Benefit Requirements) Amendment Rules 2012 (No. 2) (the Rules) were registered with the Federal Register of Legislative Instruments (FRLI) and took effect on 12 April 2012 (FRLI No. F2012L00822).

A change to the Rules relating to Schedule 5 – Second Tier Default Benefits (Second Tier) is outlined below.

Schedule 5 - Additions

The following private hospital facility that has been added to Schedule 5 of the Rules will be eligible for Second Tier until 1 July 2013.

Renewal Reminder

Further to Private Health Insurance Circular PHI 20/12 of 23 March 2012, please note that private hospital facilities wishing to be considered for renewal of eligibility beyond 30 June 2012 need to submit applications to the next Second Tier Advisory Committee meeting on Friday 25 May 2012.

Applicants should submit nine copies of their applications to the following address by Friday, 4 May 2012:

Applicants should also provide at least two copies of a covering letter which contains contact details of the person responsible for the application, including name, position title, phone number and postal address.

Accurate and Up-to-date Declared Hospital Details

A hospital declaration is a legal instrument and it is important that information pertaining to declared hospitals is accurately reflected. In accordance with Private Health Insurance Circular PHI 76/11 of 17 October 2011, declared facilities need to notify the Department of Health and Ageing in the event of any of the following circumstances:
  • name/ownership changes
  • address changes
  • mergers
  • closures.
Any notifications/queries in this regard should be made to the Hospital Declarations Info inbox.

Please note that failure to notify could result in delays to gaining eligibility for Second Tier.
