Change to the format of Prostheses Billing Codes

Purpose

To initiate a consultation process between the Department and key stakeholders in the private health insurance industry in relation to changing the Prostheses List billing code format. To cater for the growing number of sponsors and number of products on the Prostheses List, the Department intends to change billing codes from two alpha characters and three numerical characters (AA123), to three alpha characters and five numerical characters (AAA12345). This will allow sponsors to have one unique alpha code for all listed products.

Change to Prosthesis List Billing Codes

The proposed change is scheduled to take effect for the production of the August 2013 Prostheses List. The Department acknowledges that this proposed change will require significant system changes for stakeholders and welcomes feedback on the proposed timeframe.

The Department is committed to an appropriate consultation period to address all concerns that may be brought forward in relation to the proposed change. Stakeholders can contact the Prostheses Section via email or by calling the Prostheses Hotline on (02) 6289 9463.
