Information Request to Progress the Review of the Australian Government Rebate on Private Health Insurance for Natural Therapies

As announced in the 2012-13 Budget, the review of the Australian Government Rebate on Private Health Insurance (the rebate) for natural therapies (the review), will examine the evidence of clinical efficacy, cost effectiveness and safety and quality of natural therapies.

Following the completion of the review, the Government will introduce through regulation a list of natural therapies that will continue to receive the rebate. Natural therapy treatments not included on this list will no longer be eligible for the rebate.

Information request

To progress the review, the Department requests insurers to:
  • Identify the natural therapies offered under their current Complying Health Insurance Products (CHIPs) and provide a description of what service or product is associated with the benefits paid for each natural therapy; or
  • Provide confirmation that no natural therapies are currently offered under their CHIPs.

Responses are requested by COB, 14 January 2013 via email to Private Health.

As the review progresses, updated information will be provided on the Department’s website.
