Health needs and priorities

Palmerston is located 21km south of Darwin and has a population of approximately 30,000. The location has attracted many young families and is the most densely populated region in the Northern Territory.

The Palmerston Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community population is approximately 12.8%.

An Aboriginal Health Worker is available to welcome clients in the traditional manner and to assist clients with completing their registration and other necessary paperwork.

The needs of the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community are being addressed with a weekly ‘Closing the Gap’ clinic coordinated between an Aboriginal Health Worker, practice nurse, allied health professionals and a GP.

All staff at the Palmerston GP Super Clinic undergo cross-cultural training. Other significant health needs in the region include mental health (anxiety and depression). The Clinic provides substantial services in this regard (see above).

Clinical training arrangements

A new initiative under development is the establishment of a medical student led clinic to be run in conjunction with the Flinders University NT Medical Program. This initiative will expand the clinic's capacity to involve medical students in the delivery of health care to the region.

Shared opportunities exist for continuing professional development with the provision of facilities to and access to academic staff with General Practice Network NT and NT General Practice Education.

FCD Health Ltd (FCD), a partnership of Charles Darwin and Flinders Universities, operates the clinic on behalf of the Northern Territory Department of Health. As partners in the Clinic, the Universities offer academic supervision for medical, physiotherapy, and dietetics students. Top of page

Students are involved in multidisciplinary case conferencing, formal and informal education sessions and observational review of clinical practice. The student model offers an opportunity for all staff to teach and to be recognised by Flinders and Charles Darwin Universities with academic status. FCD nurses have completed a preceptorship course allowing each nurse to act as a student nurse supervisor.

The Palmerston GP Super Clinic has an approved service delivery model where students from the two universities and other local training facilities, work alongside qualified GPs, provide the first point of contact for patients in their own room and are often the first contact for emergency presentations in combination with a nurse and a GP supervisor.

There are currently a number of student doctors undertaking part time training at the GP Super Clinic on a rotational basis.
