Description of clinic
The Strathpine GP Super Clinic, a new two-storey, 1100m
² facility, is part of a modern commercial/retail precinct on a major road. There is ample car parking and ambulance access at ground level. It is located on the main rail and bus routes through the area.
The clinic opened on 11 January 2010.

Services
Multidisciplinary care
The Strathpine GP Super Clinic has GPs, nurses (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, chronic disease management and mental health services), and allied health practitioners.
Services offered include diabetes education, mental health and psychological services, audiology, physiotherapy, podiatry, dietetics, exercise physiology, pathology, chiropractic care and occupational health services, women and men’s health, child health services, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services.
Preventative services
The clinic also offers:
- immunisation services
- health assessments and care plans
- skin checks
- 45 year old health checks
- seniors health checks
- acupuncture
The clinic has a focus on prevention and management of chronic and complex diseases. It has chronic disease management-trained nurses who help facilitate patient access to health care plans focusing on: diabetes, cardiovascular disease, asthma, chronic respiratory disease and arthritis.
The clinic is in the process of coordinating a new group education program that will include the psychologist, exercise physiologist, Chronic Disease Management Nurse and Dietician.
The clinic has 3 pap-qualified nurses, who provide ad hoc pap smear services and offer a pap smear clinic on a Saturday each month. Top of page
Other services
The clinic provides services from Visiting Medical Specialists (currently fortnightly visits from a surgeon and a gynaecologist). The clinic provides health professionals and members of the community with access to a health library and resources to provide support for preventative care.
The clinic is adjacent to a local community pharmacy which is open 7 days per week.
Health needs and priorities
Strathpine is an outer northern suburb of Brisbane. It is located in the Local Government Area of Pine Rivers which has a population of 141,141 including 1,899 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, representing 1.34% of the local population, and 5,249 single parent families. The Pine Rivers area has a broad chronic disease profile with a population characterised by greater than average rates of chronic health problems.
In response, the Strathpine GP Super Clinic provides a wide range of services targeting both the prevention and management of chronic disease and major risk factors such as obesity and diabetes, as indicated above.
The clinic operator has worked closely with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander specific health services are available. The clinic is also a Closing the Gap Practice Incentive Program registered practice.

Operating hours
Weekdays: 8am-7pm, Saturday: 8am-6pm, and Sunday: 9am-5pm.
The clinic employs a deputising service (Family Care Medical Services) to ensure that patients have 24 hours access to care.
Billing arrangements
All Medicare rebateable services are fully bulk billed. Services provided by Visiting Medical Specialists (currently a surgeon and a gynaecologist) are not bulk billed, but discount rates to card holders are offered by some specialists.
Home visits and visits to residential aged care facilities
Home visits and visits to residential aged care facilities are available.
Clinical training arrangements
Since commencing operations, the clinic has trained a significant number of health science students from disciplines including nursing, podiatry, radiology, social work and pharmacy.
In 2013, the Strathpine GP Super Clinic will continue to train nursing, allied health and radiography students.
The Strathpine GP Super Clinic is a training practice with the Central and Southern Training consortium for General Practitioners and provides placements for GP Registrars.
The Strathpine GP Super Clinic is part of a project that provides a new model of clinical training placement for Queensland University of Technology (QUT) nursing and allied health students through collaboration between QUT and the Strathpine and Gladstone GP Super Clinics and the Golden Beach Medical Centre.
The Strathpine GP Super Clinic is also part of three clinics that are offering the first primary care social work student placements offered by the QUT, with the main areas of focus for social work at the clinic to include crisis intervention. Top of page
