The Natural Therapies Review 2019-20 is an update to the 2014-15 review to assess additional available evidence of the clinical effectiveness of the 16 natural therapies excluded from private health insurance from 1 April 2019.
Since 1 April 2019 the following natural therapies have been excluded from complying health insurance products: Alexander technique, aromatherapy, Bowen therapy, Buteyko, Feldenkrais, Western herbalism, homeopathy, iridology, kinesiology, naturopathy, Pilates, reflexology, Rolfing, shiatsu, tai chi, and yoga.
The Natural Therapies Review 2019-20 will examine additional evidence which has emerged since the previous review and provide advice to Government on whether any of the natural therapies should be covered by private health insurance and therefore eligible for subsidy through the Private Health Insurance Rebate.
Natural Therapies Review Expert Advisory Panel
The Australian Government Chief Medical Officer, Professor Brendan Murphy, has established the Natural Therapies Review Expert Advisory Panel to support him in conducting the Natural Therapies Review 2019-20.
Panel members have been appointed on the basis of their expertise in research or evaluation of scientific evidence of clinical effectiveness and/or experience in practice in the relevant natural therapies.
Natural Therapies Working Committee
The Natural Therapies Review 2019-20 is being supported by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The NHMRC has established the Natural Therapies Working Committee to provide oversight of the conduct of the evidence evaluations as part of the review.
Call for evidence
To provide stakeholders with an opportunity to contribute to the Natural Therapies Review 2019-20, the Department has published a call for evidence for Tranche 1 natural therapies on the Department’s Consultation Hub. The evidence provided through this process will feed into the evidence evaluations being overseen by the Natural Therapies Working Committee.
The Department expects to hold another call for evidence for Tranche 2 in mid-2020.
