Can I disturb asbestos materials in my home?

Householders may carry out minor repairs on asbestos cement materials, as long as the recommended safety precautions for these activities are followed (see Key 'Dos and don'ts' for handling asbestos materials).

In some states and territories there are restrictions on how much asbestos cement sheeting homeowners can remove themselves without a licence; check the regulations in your state or territory for details. In all cases, the recommended precautions for minimising release of asbestos fibres, cleaning up and disposing of waste should be carefully followed to reduce the risk to yourself, your family and your neighbours (see Peter’s bathroom).

However, some jobs are best left to the experts. If you are considering a renovation that involves disturbing large amounts of asbestos cement materials, removing friable asbestos products, or demolition of all or part of your property, don’t do this work yourself. Engage a licensed asbestos removalist who knows how to manage this work safely, and without risk to you or your neighbours.

Friable asbestos material should be removed only by a licensed asbestos removalist.

How to find a licensed asbestos removalist

For information regarding licenced asbestos removalists, refer to Licensed asbestos removalist and demolition information, or the Yellow Pages under ‘Asbestos removalists’.

You can also contact your relevant health and safety authority to confirm that the business’s licence is valid and correct.
