5.1 Methods of drug administration

To affect the brain, a psycho-active drug must enter the body and reach the bloodstream in a process called pharmacokinetics. There are a variety of ways of administering drugs to allow them to enter the body.

The most common methods of drug administration include:

  • injecting
  • smoking
  • inhaling
  • snorting
  • swallowing.
Each of these methods will be described more fully later in this topic.
