B.5 Physical activity questions

Page last updated: 20 April 2012

Adapted from the Active Australia Survey1

These questions are about any physical activities that you may have done in the last week:

Walking

1. In the last week, what do you estimate was the total time that you spent walking (continuously for 10 minutes of more) for recreation, exercise or to get to / from places?

Other physical activity for fitness recreation or sport

2. In the last week, what do you estimate was the total time that you spent doing physical activity (excluding walking) for the purpose of fitness, recreation or sport? This might include your participation in activities like organised sport, jogging, attending a gym, aerobics or swimming.

Incidental physical activity

3. In the last week what do you estimate was the total time that you spent doing vigorous gardening or heavy work around the yard or house that made you breathe harder or puff and pant?

All activities

4. In the last week on how many days would you estimate you spent time doing any of the physical activities we have spoken about?

These questions should be tailored to each participant group, they may need to be reworded. These questions can be used in survey based tools, face to face or telephone interviews or can be adapted to be used to guide story telling. You should use the most appropriate method for your participant group.
