Single dose stereotactic radiosurgery delivers focused radiation beams to targets in the brain. 201 individual radiation sources (cobalt 60) are positioned in a hemisphere so that the beams converge at a single focal point. The shape of the dose distribution is planned so at to cover the target, while aiming to minimise the effect on the surrounding healthy tissue.Description of Medical Condition
Stereotactic radiosurgery is intended to treat malignant and benign intracranial conditions. The specific indications are:- cerebral metastases
- arteriovenous malformations (AVMs)
- benign intracranial tumours
- acoustic neuroma
- meningioma
- pituitary tumours
- primary malignant intracranial tumours.
