ClosedDescription of Medical Service
Transcatheter closure of a ventricular septal defect is performed under general anesthesia and access is obtained utilizing both femoral artery and femoral vein. Ventricular angiography would demonstrate the anatomy of the ventricular septal defect prior to closure. The ventricular septal defect is crossed using a catheter from the left ventricular side and a device is deployed which will result in complete occlusion of the ventricular septal defect.Description of Medical Condition
A ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a hole in the ventricular septum between the left ventricle and the right ventricle. The two types of ventricular septal defects suitable for closure are the perimembranous VSD which is situated high in the ventricular septum beneath the aortic valve and muscular VSD which can be located anywhere in the ventricular septum. The presence of a VSD results in a left to right shunt and consequent volume overload of the heart. This can result in cardiac failure. The usual indication for closure of VSD would be a net shunt greater than 1.6:1.Reason for Application
