Description of Medical Service

NMP is a non-contact, non-invasive [digital] imaging technique that provides images of the retina and optic disc. NMP provides a means for earlier detection of diabetic retinopathy and vision loss in people with diagnosed diabetes who do not attend an eyecare practitioner for a mydriatic fundus assessment.

Description of Medical Condition

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a disease of the retina that eventually develops in nearly all patients with diabetes mellitus and is directly related to poor control of blood sugar, blood pressure and blood lipids.

DR progresses in a predicable fashion from minimal to more severe changes if there is no intervention. The earliest clinical signs of DR include microaneurysms and haemorrhages. Visual loss results mainly from macular oedema / and or proliferative diabetic retinotherapy.
