Description of Medical Service

Targeted intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) is a form of partial breast irradiation which involves giving radiotherapy using the intrabeam device to the tissues surrounding a breast cancer in the operating theatre after surgical removal of the tumour. The rationale of IORT is to accurately target the tissues where there is the highest risk of cancer returning.

Description of Medical Condition

Early breast cancer. Patients suitable for this modality instead of external beam radiotherapy should meet the following criteria: aged 50 years plus; pathologically documented invasive breast cancer; consideration by the surgeon to be suitable for breast conserving surgery; and no contraindication to breast irradiation.
