Point of Care Testing (PoCT) Training, Certification, Support and Skill Maintenance Program

Assessment of project overall July 2010 to June 2012

Page last updated: 20 May 2013

Whether the flowing Aims of the Project have been met:

  1. To provide access to a training and support service that will allow PoCT devices to be operated by health personnel to adequate clinical standards.
Response: APPN has been established and the support service is used by now more than 1300 registered users; the increase in users over the life of the project is shown in Appendix 6. Furthermore the uptake of competency testing and the pass rates show that the APPN is having an impact on the conduct of POCT in the community.
  2. The establishment of core education and assessment modules for competency in the operation and maintenance of PoCT devices in settings outside laboratories (such as in GP practices) which, once endorsed, can be delivered by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) and used under relevant accreditation frameworks as a basis for competency assessment.
Response: Education modules have been developed and can now be accessed on APPN for Glucose, INR, Lipids, HbA1c, BNP and Troponin. Furthermore the uptake and understanding of them is being assessed by a significant number of registrants taking the competency testing. Endorsement of these is shown by RTO organisations such as the RACGP, ACRRM and RCNA accrediting this content through awarding of points in their CME programs.
