Expanding settings for medical specialist training

1.3 Medical Specialist Training Steering Committee and Reference Groups

Page last updated: October 2006

AHMAC established the Medical Specialist Training Steering Committee (MSTSC) to address issues relating to the implementation of the taskforce findings. The committee appointed three reference groups - made up of representatives from Australian, state and territory governments and some professional colleges, hospitals and universities - to examine specific issues. The MSTSC terms of reference tasked it with an examination of these issues for specialist medical training. The specialty of general practice was excluded ,given the developments that had occurred in general practice training through the establishment of General Practice Education and Training Pty Ltd (GPET).

Reference Group 1 was asked to look at risk assessment - implementation costs and benefits, and administration and delivery issues. Reference Group 2 examined the implications of the changes for public hospitals. Reference Group 3 reviewed existing training programs and skill requirements.

Please see Appendix A for the terms of reference and conceptual framework for the reference groups, Appendix B for a list of their members, and Appendix C for milestones for each group.
