Expanding settings for medical specialist training

5.1 Introduction

Page last updated: October 2006

This chapter provides a summary of workforce numbers and the financial implications of expanding specialist training outside the major public hospital teaching framework. The analysis was conducted by consultants and guided by Reference Group 1.

Detailed analyses were undertaken for the current workforce of ten specialties and subspecialties with varying training and service delivery features. A key assumption was that there should be no diminution of the numbers of specialist trainees in the public teaching hospital system because they play such a vital service delivery role.

Options for funding an expansion of training settings, and the extent to which training settings outside the major public hospitals can be expanded to accommodate the increase in specialist trainee numbers, are considered elsewhere in this report.
